Report 9/13

Fishing has been phenomenal as of late.  Although we might not be seeing many fish they have been really hot during key windows so make sure you are on your favorite spots when those windows open.  When do the windows ope you might ask??  Well you will need to spend more time on the water to find that out.  As of late we have been averaging from 2-4 bites an outing with clients really banging up on the fish.  Action has been from a mix of bucktails including the NEW APACHE triple bladed bucktail by Musky Frenzy Lures and Cowgirls as well as topwater.  My favorite topwater lately has been the Cannonball Jr. from Lake X Lures.  Here are a bunch of pictures of clients from recent trips.  Great job guys!!!

Who loves a good front?

What do most guys do when they come from the land of huge whitetails to pick their daughter up from the airport?  They book a trip with Apex Predator Fishing when there is an incoming storm front.  This was some of the fastest action I have ever seen.  Fish 3 spots and catch fish on all of them.  Brent and his daughter Kaley did a phenomenal job of placing their #Apache bucktails right where they needed to be.  Did I mention that Kaley had never casted a muskie reel before so I had to teach her how while the wind was blowing 25 mph?!  After a crash course we went to our first spot where Kaley had a fish roll over a bucktail and then proceed to come eat Brent’s bucktail boatside!!!  At least we think that’s what happened.  Spot 2 we lost one coming toward the net and then Kaley crushed her first muskie ever!  With a large storm front approaching I gave them the option of making a move to a big fish spot and they accepted(without question), and Brent proceeded to bag a monster 47!  Great job out there you 2, talk about an awesome father-daughter team!  That is what it’s all about, thanks for the great day on the water.

Wishin I was Fishin!!!

I was recently thinking back to April 2013 when my wife and I took a trip down to Marco Island, Florida.  I was on a mission to catch a tarpon with my friend Captain Ben Olsen.  We fished extremely hard for multiple days and for anyone who thinks tarpon are an easy fish to catch they have another thing coming.  We had consistently been on fish but they were not cooperating.  Finally, on one of my last days there I hooked up and she was big.  After about 45 minutes we got her boat-side and I got to put my hands on her.  She probably went around 6 ft and 130 lbs!!! It was a trip of a lifetime….Thanks Ben!!!  Here is some jumping footage. Enjoy!

Take a Vet Fishing

Today was the Take a Vet Fishing event on Lake Minnetonka and what an event it was!  The event was extremely well run by everyone that had a hand in it and I was honored to be a part of it.  I was paired up with the team of Adam and Jim Wychor.  Adam is an Iraq war veteran and his grandfather Jim is a Korean war veteran.  I was asked if I would be a walleye guide for the day and I happily accepted.  Much to my dismay the walleye were cooperative on Minnetonka this morning and from the moment we started until just about noon the action was fast and furious.  We caught upwards of 30 walleye with a few doubles.  Jim and Adam really put the hurtin on em, in fact they kept me so busy I didn’t really have time to take pictures.  All in all it was great day on the water and I made a couple new friends out of the deal.  The next time you have an opportunity to volunteer your time for America’s veterans please take full advantage of it, you will be happy you did.

Here is a picture of me and my new friend Jim.takeavetfishing

P.S.  I believe that Jim and Adam may have won the trip to Moosehorn Lodge on Lac Suel in Ontario, Canada donated by Linda Rice.  Congratulations guys!!!

George Wahl Memorial Muskie Tournament

This weekend is the George Wahl Memorial Muskie Tournament…a tournament that I look forward to fishing every year.  It is an eleven hour tournament this year that consists of all of the best metro waters including the tiger muskie stocked lakes.  Please come out and fish it to pay your respects to George Wahl who was a huge advocate for muskie and muskie stocking.  The best thing about this tournament is that all of the proceeds go right back into our fisheries to support the thing we love the most…after our wives and kids of course……MUSKIE FISHING!!!

Have fun and good luck!  See you on the water!

Hitting the net HARD

The last few trips out have been action packed.  I haven’t attached pics because most of the fish we have caught were all sub 45 but the fishing has been nothing short of fantastic with 6 bites the last 2 nights with 4 boated!  With the new job starting my mind is working in overtime and it is hard to set the rods down but I have just gained a lot more responsibilities.  With that being said I have had a great time fishing with friends and clients lately and I thank you all for the great memories we have made on the water this year.  The boat should be back up and running very shortly once this throttle cable shows up and I still have some weekend guide trip availability as well as a few August days.  Call me for availability and lets put some slime in the Ranger!!  Tight lines everyone!!! 612-310-3254

Wounded Warriors Project

Last Sunday I had the pleasure of taking a veteran out muskie fishing.  It was an action packed day and I am sad to say that no muskies hit the net.  It took my client a little bit to get the hang of casting the muskie gear but once he got warmed up he put the reels to the test.  All in all we had two lost fish and he had an absolute giant to the boat on the last spot but just wasn’t able to seal the deal.  Oh well!!  Giving up some time to make an American veterans day was more than worth my time and we had an absolute blast!  It was too bad I could not hang around and enjoy the lunch and everyone’s company for a little bit but the little lady needed me.

The action in the metro continues to be HOT!!! Give me a call to book a trip!!

Roll With the Punches

I have been so busy I am just now able to update what has been going on with the muskies lately.  I have found the fish everywhere from deep to ultra shallow in the last two weeks.  One day the fish are moving out of areas of 25 ft and the next day, or later that day, they are in 1 ft.  With this being said there is one main trick I can give you to stay on top of the muskies.  Make sure you do not get sucked into fishing only shallow, or only deep weed edges.  Pick out a structure that contains multiple features  and deep water near by and begin dissecting it.

With all of the rain lately storm fronts have definitely been a hot ticket if you do not mind fishing right up to when a storm is going to hit.  Tonka has had a steady bite going and has been very peaceful to fish with the no wake rule on the entire lake.  I ran a guide trip on Monday with two 13 year old boys who did a tremendous job out there.  As a storm front was moving in the fish became super active and the boys had multiple chances at fish with one being a low 50 inch class fish.  I hooked a mid 40 inch fish boat-side and attempted to hand my rod to one of the boys but the fish got the best of us.  All-in-all it was a fun day one the water with a couple young up and coming muskie fishermen.

The fish are biting right now so give Apex Predator Fishing a call and I will put you on the fish!

Here’s a couple from last week.

My buddy Eric with a hefty 49 he got pre-fishing with me for the metro tourney.

Wisconsin Muskie Opener 2014

What a great Memorial Day weekend it was!  The muskie fishing opener for Wisconsin is in the books and it was a good one.  I was fishing with good friend Seneca Buyukli and it did not take too long to figure out where the fish were…mainly because the hundreds of boats working the best areas!  We ended the weekend with this super dark 49 incher that had eggs coming out of her.  Super gorgeous fish that looked nothing like the typical GB fish.  After a short fight I got a couple quick pics and she swam away fast and healthy.  Sunday we were beat by the fish as I hooked up with a good one within 10 ft of shore on a topwater and she shook the bait within four headshakes.  Moments like that are what muskie fishing is all about!

I also had the chance to get out mushroom hunting with my bro Jason Hutter back in his woods and I think he was pleasantly surprised with what we found.  We hit a nice load finding around 40 morels around one tree!

What a great weekend!  The only thing missing was my wife, my little peanut, my parents and sister.

A GIANT thanks goes out to all of the vets out there that have put their lives on the line so that the rest of us can enjoy the freedoms we love!!

God Bless America!
